Our Wigan roofing service

Wigan sits at the northern edge of our regular service area but we've been doing consistent work in WN1, WN2, WN3, WN5 and WN6 for many years. The town has a dense Victorian core — rows of colliery-worker terraces around Scholes, Ince and Platt Bridge — a strong 1930s ring of semis around Pemberton, Marus Bridge and Norley, and extensive post-war estates in Worsley Mesnes, Winstanley and Kitt Green. Coal-mining heritage means chimney sulphate attack is a real and recurring issue.

Wigan chimneys deserve a special mention. Domestic coal was king here for longer than most of Merseyside — many houses were still burning solid fuel into the early 1980s. The sulphate damage to lime and cement mortars in chimney stacks is noticeably more advanced than in towns where gas arrived earlier. When we survey a Wigan Victorian or Edwardian chimney, we're looking for lean, soft bricks, eroded joints, and any sign that the brickwork itself (not just the mortar) has been attacked. Often what looks like a repointing job turns out to need a partial or full rebuild.

Wigan customer reviews

★★★★★
Both chimneys on our Scholes terrace were leaning badly. Full rebuild on both — matched the original brick, exact pot pattern. Looks like they've never been touched.
Laura P. Scholes WN1
★★★★★
Had the whole roof done in Spanish T1 slate, proper membrane, new leadwork. Eight days on site, neat as you like, and the 10-year guarantee certificate arrived by email the week after.
Gary D. Pemberton WN5
★★★★★
Flat roof on the garage conversion had been leaking for a year. Firestone EPDM in two days, no more leaks. Quote was the middle of three, quality was clearly the best.
Kevin B. Marus Bridge WN3
★★★★★
Commercial job on our Robin Park unit. Proper CDM paperwork, H&S reps walked the site, clean handover. Better than any roofer we'd used before.

Wigan roofing — frequently asked questions

Is Wigan chimney damage really worse than elsewhere?

On pre-1980 houses, yes. Extended solid-fuel use during the 1960s-80s meant more sulphate exposure over a longer period than in towns that switched to gas earlier. We'd expect to rebuild rather than just repoint on around 30% of Wigan chimneys of that age — higher than the roughly 15% rate we see in Liverpool itself.

Do you cover Standish and the northern Wigan villages?

WN6 Standish, Shevington, Aspull and Up Holland are all within our regular service. These are more drive time from the yard so lead times may be a couple of days longer, but we take these jobs all year round.

How do you know if a chimney needs rebuild rather than repoint?

Three main tests: lean (plumb-line from the stack top — anything more than 20mm off vertical is suspect), brick softness (a coin or screwdriver point should scratch, not embed), and cracking (vertical cracks through the stack or horizontal bed-joint cracks running across it). If two of the three fail, we quote rebuild.

Do you handle listed buildings in Wigan?

Yes — we've worked on several listed and conservation-area properties in Wigan borough, including some in Up Holland and Standish. Listed work takes longer because of planning conditions and the need for specific material sourcing (reclaimed Welsh slate, lime-mortar pointing, sometimes hand-dressed leadwork). We're experienced with the process.

What's the drive time for an emergency call?

From the Liverpool yard to central Wigan via the M58 is 45-55 minutes outside rush hour, 60-75 minutes in rush hour. For genuine emergencies (active leaks) we aim to be on-site within 90 minutes any time day or night.
