Our St Helens roofing service
St Helens has a housing stock shaped by its industrial past — row upon row of late-Victorian terraces built for glassworks and colliery workers, inter-war council estates in places like Sutton Manor, and more recent developments around Haydock and Rainford. The town's heavy industrial heritage means a lot of roofs were originally laid with quite basic materials — cheap imported slate, thin softwood battens, sand-cement ridges — and many are now ready for serious attention. Liverpool Roofs has been covering the WA9, WA10 and WA11 postcodes for over fifteen years.
A noticeable feature of St Helens roofing is the long-span front-to-back terrace with deep valley gutters between neighbouring pairs. These valleys were typically lead-lined and often in Code 3 or Code 4 — which is adequate for a valley but at the absolute minimum of spec. After 120+ years many of these original valleys are now showing pinhole corrosion. We re-line in Code 5, welted rather than folded, with proper pointing into the surrounding slate. It's a bigger job than patching, but it lasts three or four times as long.

Old 1890s terrace re-slated from scratch. The crew found rotten rafter ends during the strip, showed me photos, agreed the cost of sistering them before carrying on. No surprises on the final bill.Kevin D. Sutton Manor WA9

St Helens roofing — frequently asked questions
Are the WA9 terraces really all ready for a re-roof?
Not all — but many. The test isn't age alone; it's condition. We look for slate softening (if you can dent it with a thumbnail, it's gone), nail corrosion visible in the loft, failed underlay (old black felt will shower dust when disturbed), and broken-slate count per slope. If the roof fails three of those four tests, a re-roof is almost certainly better value than another round of repairs.
Do you do industrial work in Haydock and the other St Helens industrial estates?
Yes — we're Sika Sarnafil and IKO Armourplan accredited for commercial single-ply work. We've done large warehouse roofs in Haydock, St Helens Linkway and Gerards Bridge industrial areas. These are quoted per-project and include structural surveys where required.
Are St Helens chimneys often shared party-wall?
Almost universally on mid-terraces. St Helens terraces were built with brick party walls that carried the chimneys of both adjoining properties — usually two flues each side, so four pots on every stack. Repointing or rebuilding requires neighbour consent to access the shared side; we handle the paperwork.
Is coal-flue sulphate attack a problem in St Helens?
Very much so. St Helens was a heavy domestic coal-burning town until well after the 1956 Clean Air Act — flue gases laced with sulphur attacked the lime mortar in thousands of chimneys, leaving them leaning or with soft brickwork. We test chimneys for lean and sulphate softness at quote stage and will recommend rebuild rather than repoint where the brickwork has gone soft.
How long is a typical roof job in St Helens?
Small repairs: same day to two days. Chimney work: 3-4 days. Roofline: 1-2 days. Re-roof on a typical mid-terrace: 6-8 working days. Commercial single-ply: 2-4 weeks depending on size and access.
